Parshas Mishpatim (5771)

by Mordechai Dolinsky

We must understand the great avlah that Rashi brings at the beginning of the sedra of bringing a court case before a secular judge if their laws are exactly as the Torah’s. As accurate as the tenets of the judicial system might be parallel to ours, it is based on their logical conclusions. The source of our Mishpatim comes from the Essence of Hashem. As the Nefesh HaChayim and Baal HaTanya explain the basis of even the most basic laws stem from the Essence of Hashem. Indeed our relying on the logic of the secular court is a great lack of recognition and respect for the Borei Olam.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and a fulfilling Chodesh.

Hashem’s awesome presentation of Matan Torah is complemented with an ongoing communication to Klal Yisroel.  The gift of the Torah to us was the result of our superb yearning to devote ourselves to fulfilling Hashem’s Will.  This is an ongoing process, each individual receiving his portion according to his yearning as can be seen by Yisro’s revelation of how Moshe Rabeinu was to conduct the awesome responsibility of posek.

Hashem likewise reveals Himself clearly in our personal lives according to our yearning.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Rashi brings at the beginning of the parsha that Hashem rerouted Klal Yisroel for the fear that it might even enter their minds to reconsider their willingness to leave Mitzrayim.  How awesome, how Hashem deals and connects with our thoughts.

The Shira we say every day is the expression of Klal Yisroel and Moshe Rabeinu having witnessed the most awesome revelation of the malchus Shomayim.  It is of utmost importance that we connect with it in that way.

The darkness of our galus daily increases the callousness of our relating to our fellow man.  The avodas hazman is to do everything in our power to overcome this and to show our love and concern to all the neshamos around us.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Indeed, our parsha is full of sources that should and must inspire us especially considering that the whole picture of our avodas Hashem should be based on the inspiration that we should get from the “makos”.  It is however, a priority to point out that as the days go by in our dark galus there seems to be a greater callousness and lack of sensitivity to all in our envoirnment; parents to children, children to parents, neighbors, friends and it the highest priority in our purpose of existence in this world and serving Hashem to connect with all human beings.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Hashem instructs Moshe to say — I didn’t send you l’chinam, for nothing (Rashi in the beginning of the parsha).  Did it enter anyone’s thoughts that it could have been for “nothing”?  If a person in not sincere and truthful this could enter his mind and then indeed it truly looks like it was for nothing.  This is “darchei Hashem”; b’derech sheadam rotzeh…molichin oso.  And so it truly appears to him.  The only salvation is to be truthful and sincere.

Yaakov (22:28) set aside this stone for further crucial “use” since it was critical as a tool which brought him to the realization of the Shaar HaShomayim.  (It was upon this stone that he had the revealing dream of the significance and importance of the place).  He attributed its ability to be the tool to its intrinsic pureness.

It is critical and crucial that we likewise use appropriate tools to achieve and to connect to the pure truth.

Perhaps the immediate midah keneged midah of Bnai Yisroel being confined in Egypt and the slavery was that they did not leave on their own when the time allowed. Let”s all be sensitive to understand and do the Ratzon Hashem.

In these dark days with the midas hadin standing out and having to enter Shabbos after an erev Shabbos asara b’teves, it is even more vital to strengthen the great foundation of Klal Yisroel with shalom and ahava between us.  To really care for one another and being extra sensitive about feelings and feeling concern for the difficulties of all and sincerely sharing the joys and simchas of our brethren.

Vayechi Yaakov – and Bnei Yisroel is alive.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Yehuda’s speech to Yosef was clear, to the point, crystallizing the truth and devarim yotzim min halev.

The idea now is to hold on to the lesson of Chanukah that Hashem revealed Himself through the miracle of the lights that He is here and in control; something which He rarely demonstrates.  Klal Yisroel earned this through their great commitment to Him and to the Torah.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

The celebration of Chanukah is not for the miracle of the extension of the light of the Menorah and not for the victory of the physical battle but for the supreme commitment for the inspiration to fulfill the will of Hashem.  In this zechus Hashem showed His Countenance by the revelation of the great Divine light which is manifested in the lights of the Menorah.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and a significant and happy Chanukah.
